QUESTION #1
My anxiety has gotten worse as I have gotten older. I worry about things that never bothered me before. My husband says I look for things to worry about. Is this a normal part of aging? What can I do?

Dear Alyse,
Aging doesn't inherently cause anxiety; however as people age, they may encounter different life changes and challenges that could contribute to feelings of anxiety. For example, they may face more health issues or physical limitations that can promote anxiety. Life transitions such as retirement, loss of loved ones, or changes in living situations can trigger anxiety for some people.
Aging can sometimes be accompanied by increased social isolation and thoughts about mortality, both of which may lead to feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Managing finances during retirement or facing economic challenges in later life can be a source of worry. Some older adults may experience anxiety about memory decline or cognitive impairment.
To be clear, many older adults maintain excellent mental well-being and adjust well to the changes that come with aging. Anxiety is a complex condition influenced by various factors, including genetics, life experiences, health status, and lifestyle choices.
If your anxiety starts interfering with your quality of life or your physical or mental health, know that you are not alone. I suggest addressing it like you would any other medical condition. Start by talking with your doctor, and consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Other important steps to lessen anxiety symptoms are to prioritize regular exercise, sleep, and social connections; to limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine; and to engage in meaningful activities that bring you joy and satisfaction.
Early intervention and appropriate support can significantly help improve overall health for people with anxiety. After all, asking for help is a sign of strength!

If alcohol is said to worsen anxiety, why do I feel less anxious after a few drinks? I have anxiety and alcoholism in my family and I wonder what’s the connection? - P.A.
