Health Is a Conversation
Who would you want in yours?
Do you ever leave the doctor’s office wishing you’d asked something? Or wishing you’d BEEN asked?
In my experience, some of the most important health conversations never happen in the exam room. They’re the things you don’t mention—the wine you’ve been leaning on to take the edge off, the parent you’re worried about, the symptom you’re embarrassed to say out loud. The fears. The vulnerabilities. The stuff that actually keeps you up at night.
There just isn’t time. When doctors are rushed and patients FEEL rushed, it’s harder for doctors to get beneath the checklist. It’s also harder for patients to feel safe enough to ask what they came to ask.
Trust is the glue in any relationship, and trust takes time. Time to listen, and time to be heard.
That’s a big part of why I wrote Beyond the Prescription. And it’s why I’m starting the official Beyond the Prescription Book Club.
Because questions get better when you ask them out loud, with other people. Not alone, driving home from the doctor’s appointment—but live, in a room with people working through the same things you are. Community isn’t icing on the cake—it’s part of the recipe.
The book club asks you to pre-order three copies—one to keep, two to give away. The two extra copies are for the two people you’d want in the conversation with you. The friend who keeps getting brushed off by her doctor. The parent facing a new diagnosis. The kid heading off to college in the fall, figuring out how to be a patient without you in the room. (And if no one comes to mind, donate them—to your local library, or an independent bookstore that could use them.)
If you’ve been on the fence, here’s everything you need to join the book club in one place:
