Practice What You Preach
This weekend I took a deep exhale. I escaped with a friend to rural West Virginia for two days, and it was just what the doctor ordered.
I had an epiphany (the same one that my husband had for me about a year ago): it’s time for me to take a break from my “extracurricular” life.
Perhaps like you, I’m exhausted and a little burned out. I miss my friends. I miss my goofy sense of humor. I miss yoga. I miss lazy weekends, sleeping late, and reading books. I miss meandering around my favorite consignment store on Saturdays.
My brain needs rest. My body needs movement. My hair needs professional help.
I’ve been writing and speaking about COVID-19 and the pandemic’s ripple effects on our bodies and minds since March 2020. Reaching a wide audience with facts and guidance—and about the inseparability of mental and physical health—has been a dream come true. Collaborating with colleagues and connecting with you, dear readers, has brought me great joy and meaning.
But I’m pooped.
I know I’m not alone. The pandemic has laid bare our vast vulnerabilities and the universality of suffering. Whether we have lost a loved one, a job, or the basic contours of regular life, we have all experienced loss. COVID has disrupted routines, challenged relationships, and, for many of us, put self-care last on the to-do list.
It’s time for me to take my own advice.
Where will I start?
First, I’ve decided to call this month a “me-tober.” Of course I won’t abandon my patients or my family—they are my top priority!—but I will take a hiatus from writing my newsletter, penning articles, and populating my social media feeds. Clearing my calendar of all non-essentials has already brought me much-needed calm.
Second, I’m going to ponder the meaning of life. I will focus on my health and well-being and usher in my 50th year (I turn 49 at the end of the month) with more deep breaths and brain space.
And last, I’ll continue to practice gratitude for my incredible support network of family and friends. That includes you!
I have some awesome guest posts lined up for you this month. I truly believe that it takes a village; I’m excited to share the wisdom of some of my medical friends and colleagues with you!
I will see you in November. Until then, be well.
