QUESTION #1: OMEGA-3 BENEFITS
What are the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (dry eyes, dementia) for older adults, best EPA/DHA ratio & brand/source recommendations?
-Nancy
Dear Amanda,
Great question! Omega-3 fatty acids (a.k.a. “omega-3s”) are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid that is essential for various bodily functions. They are considered essential because the body cannot produce them on its own, so they must be obtained through diet. Omega-3s are known for their various health benefits, including supporting heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation in the body. Some common food sources of omega-3s include fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines), flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and certain oils (like flaxseed oil and canola oil).
Omega-3 supplements, particularly EPA and DHA, offer several benefits for older adults. For dry eyes, omega-3s can help reduce inflammation and promote tear production, potentially alleviating symptoms. In terms of dementia, studies suggest that omega-3s may have a protective effect on cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia.
When it comes to the best EPA/DHA ratio, a common recommendation is a ratio of 2:1 EPA to DHA. Some reputable omega-3 supplement brands known for their quality and purity include Nordic Naturals, Carlson Labs, and Nutrigold. (Note that I am not getting paid to recommend them 🤓) It's essential to choose a brand that undergoes third-party testing for potency and purity.

QUESTION #2: OZEMPIC FOR ARTHRITIS AND ALZHEIMER’S?
I would love to hear your perspective on if these drugs will eventually be approved or more widely recommended for their other health benefits? I’ve been reading and hearing a lot (Dr. Mark Hyman recently had a podcast on this) about patients reduction in brain fog, arthritis and PCOS symptoms while taking GLP1. I’m interested in the research and ( if there is any) on GLP1 as a preventive for inflammatory disease and specifically Alzheimers as my mother has early onset. Do you know much about this?
