“You only need four things in your life at my age: a doctor you can trust, friends you can lean on, a sense of humor, and a good hairdresser.”

So sweet! So true!

Great news letter. A good hair dresser is 100% data driven factor!! I love it. This is a great reminder as I often say aging is a privlidge. That doesn't make it easy but reminding ourselves of this is so so important. Love all your suggestions as well. Thank you once again for all you do to try to swim against the current of our medical system.

I believe that studies show that activities like crossword puzzles, which require us to conjure up things we already know, are not useful for cognition; rather, activities that make you learn something brand new like a language or a manual skill, or travel to an unfamiliar place, are what causes the brain to be challenged in a way that can battle dementia.

Doing a crossword puzzle is great if it’s something new and challenging, as it would be to me. For those who can work them in 15 minutes, not so much.

You mention the benefits or yoga. Can you talk about it vs Pilates and why you mention one and not the other please.

The best way not to age is to welcome aging and nothing else.

Aging is just a number so why get worried about it?

It's nice if you are able to not worry! A lot of ppl do :)

Among worries AGE is perhaps the least worry to be worried. Just welcome and enjoy it.

When I see my primary care provider, it's a 15 minute appointment, no physical exam, and orders for lab work. Friends who have the same Medicare Advantage Plan tell me it's the same throughout the system. My only health care issues are arthritis in hands and wrist, and pre-diabetes (A1C 5.7). I can only have an A1C/lipid panel every other year. I asked for an OT or PT referral to get an assessment and see if there are any exercises that might help. No referral and was told it's aging and there's nothing that would help. I exercise a lot, see friends, and eat a fairly health diet. I found a wrist brace that helps when I do strength training, but as far as medical care I feel like it's only for injuries or acute illnesses.

I have a 83 year old sister who firmly believes that “ movement is medicine!”

Movement is medicine is perhaps the best advice to cure many infirmities and diseases. Aging is also a sort of MOVEMENT but a number only. Aging and movement are like twin sisters. Let us start moving and forget about aging.

Thank you for sharing your comments about the post that movement is medicine. I have found that even a short bout of walking for only 10 minutes can begin to lift my mood. I take part in a weekly Saturday morning walking group (we started 15+ years ago), I am going to suggest a new motto, “Let us start moving and forget about aging!” I love that affirmation!

Life is a continues process which is stopped when a person dies. We can categorize life as childhood

adolescence youth and age but all these phases have their own charm and exuberance so we may enjoy all these SEASONS in our life. It is very strange and odd when they dye their hair to look youthful and younger but they spoil their appearance with this artificial way. Welcome every day of life without an iota of fear of age or aging.

I’m starting to hear more and more about getting a little sunshine, as well. Not too much, but some. We get big benefits from near infrared light, and some benefit from UV also. Thank you for the wonderful post!

I love the quote about having a good hairdresser! My hair has changed so much as I've aged, perhaps because the meds I take for keeping metastatic breast cancer in check zaps all the estrogen out of my body. It used to be curly and full. Now it's straight and I have to work hard to cover over balding spots. I find myself thinking about splurging on weekly blow-outs--like the "little old ladies" do!

As a PT, I recommend that all my patients come in and get a “musculoskeletal” annual physical as well as coming in when something starts to hurt - don’t let pain linger! And a good hairdresser is definitely an essential person on my team 💜
