I also highly recommend physical therapy as a preventive measure. I had been suffering with joint pain and other issues (also 56) for more than a year. What I learned working with my PT was that much of my joint pain was caused by muscular issues. Massage, mobility work, and understanding how to anticipate flare-ups (and then address them) has greatly improved my ability to exercise and recover.

Repeat from me...I learned from a pain management psychologist that the most critical part of sleep hygiene is getting up at the same time every single morning. Once I'd adjusted, I stopped the 3am wakefulness. I'm now sleeping through most nights, if IBS doesn't interrupt, for several months.

Unbelievably, my coronary Ca score was 800. My cardiologist called and said β€œCome see me,” which I did. Stress echocardiogram was normal, and normal again several years later. Possible angina-type symptoms pushed us both into a cardiac cath, which showed a calcified right anterior descending artery, with perfectly normal blood flow through it. Go figure!

Question about your osteoporosis article. When I was put on Risedronate, my doctor told me to stop taking calcium supplements. Id love to hear your opinion on that. Thanks!

Hi Laurie - You certainly CAN take calcium tabs while on Risedronate, but in general it is better to get calcium through diet. I only recommend calcium supplementation for patients who can’t get 1000-1200 mg daily through their diet and who need it for their bones - with or without Risedronate. Hope that helps!

When it comes to the brisk walking does a treadmill count? I noticed you did not mention that. And you did mention elliptical equipment. Thanks for all of your insight!

Hi, Doctor. Forgive me if you’ve already addressed this, but what is your recommendation with regard to new risks found from alcohol? I exercise, eat right, but I do enjoy wine a few times a week. It’s such a joy in life, but is it all or nothing, in your opinion?
